A spinach recall has been issued for 9 oz. packages of Fresh Express spinach over fears that it might be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture found salmonella present in a random sample tested of Fresh Express spinach. The packages of concern have a use-by-date of November 7, product code S299B25, and UPC 0 71279-13204 4. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration noted that "no illnesses or consumer complaints" have been reported to distributor Fresh Express so far, and that the company's recall is "voluntary" and "precautionary."

For customers who have already bought the Fresh Express spinach, the USDA is advising them to not eat it but throw it away. Fresh Express is offering a full refund, which can be arranged by calling Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at (800) 242-5472.

In total the recall will affect stores in nearly 20 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tecas, Utah, Washington State, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is transferred to humans through contaminated food. It can cause serious illnesses, including fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and in very extreme case even death.

Just a day earlier, the popular chocolate milk powder Nesquik also issued a recall over salmonella fears.
