The space shuttle Endeavor, bolted to the top of a jumbo jet, took off on Friday from Edwards Air Force Base for a last airborne victory lap over California en route to its final frontier and retirement home - a science museum in Los Angeles.

Law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to "gawk and drive" saying, "If you're driving, please drive and don't try to take in the show simultaneously."

Endeavor has made 25 missions spending 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times. It is now the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home.
