Many Delta customers have received an email from Delta Airline Wednesday confirming a round-trip ticket for a flight from New York to San Francisco during the week of Nov. 26.
The emails are fraudulent and part of a scam where hackers have posed as Delta Airlines.
“We have received reports from customers of fraudulent emails claiming to be from Delta,” said Delta Airlines Spokesman Paul Skrbec, MSNBC wrote. “We have updated delta.com with an advisory and continue to work with our customers regarding these claims.”
Skrbec would not say how many customers may have received the deceptive email, but said the airline will “continue to investigate these reports from customers.”
The holidays mark heavy air travel every year, and online scams also see an increase during the season. Today many interactions pertaining to travel and shopping occur online and scams are a constant threat.
On Delta’s website customers are warned against the “phishing” scam where someone is attempting to gain financial or other confidential information through sending the false email.

“These emails claim that you have purchased a Delta ticket, a credit card has been charged and / or an invoice or receipt is attached to the email,” said the company’s site. “If you receive one of these emails, do not open the attachment as it may contain potentially dangerous viruses or harm your computer.”
The site indicates that continuous updates will be provided as they become available, and recommends that customers who have received the email change their SkyMiles account PIN as soon as possible and monitor their account for any changes.
Delta.com also warns against fraudulent postcard offers. The company notes that similar scams are happening to customers at Northwest Airline trademarks, adding, “Delta does not market in this manner, has no affiliation with these promotions, and is working to identify and stop the parties responsible.”
