Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer and his wife have paid homage to the late royal after the birth of their first child together.

Last week Spencer, 47, and his wife Countess Spencer, 39, welcome an 8-pound, 14-ounce baby girl, Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer, named after their beloved Princess Diana.

After months of poring over childrens' names, Spencer admitted that his sister's name had always been on his mind.

"We hadn't settled on a first name before the birth, but Charlotte is a name we both loved, and it really suits her. We knew as soon as we saw her," he explained according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "I very much wanted her commemorated in the naming of our daughter," he said of Princess Di.

"She's adorable," noted the exuberant 7-time father. "Another feisty little Spencer girl."

The newborn arrived at Althorp, the Spencer family home, and was the first child born at the ancestral estate since 1793. It is also the resting place of the Princess of Wales, who was burred after her death on Aug. 31, 1997.

Earl Spencer's homage to his sister comes as no surprise; during Princess Diana's funeral, her other brother Charles Spencer delivered a eulogy which promised that the Spencer family would always remember her as "the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty."

Uncle to Prince William and Prince Harry, Earl Spencer's other six children are from two previous marriages.

Meanwhile, Countess Spencer, formerly known as Karen Gordon, has two daughters from her marriage to American film and TV producer Mark Gordon.

The Spencers are one of Britain's oldest and most important families, and closely allied with the Royal Family for several generations, according to several biographies on Princess Diana.

Diana wed the Prince of Wales, Queen Elizabeth II's son, in 1981 at age 20. She went on to become a beloved icon who is still remembered with admiration today.
