An off-duty Federal agent was shot outside of his home in the San Francisco Bay area, Tuesday morning.

Little information has been released surrounding the officer and the circumstances of the shooting. The officer's name has also not been revealed, although it was established that the suspect fled in a vehicle.

"Newark Police Commander Bob Douglas said the officer was taken to a trauma center although he did not know in what condition," the Associated Press reported. The officer also reported that the incident appeared to have begun after a confrontation although it likely occurred outside "official enforcement action."

San Francisco Bay is home to nearly 8 million people. Certain residential areas within San Francisco Bay are known to be plagued by high crime rates and gang related incidents. Crime rates are higher in the residential areas of the Southeastern section of San Francisco, East Palo Alto, West Oakland and much of East Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro, Bay Point, San Pablo, and Central Richmond.

As of current, no arrests have been made.
