Apple just announced that the third generation iPad has sold 3 million units during the first three days of its release.

This is a huge milestone for the company, which launched the original iPad two years ago. That device took over a month to sell 1 million units.

"The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold - the strongest iPad launch yet," said Phillip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

"Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday," he added.

On Friday, March 23, the tablet will launch in countries like Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

The new iPad is currently available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Wi-Fi models of the new iPad come in both black and while and retail at $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB one. The 4G+Wi-Fi version starts at $629 for the 16GB, $729 for the 32GB and $829 for the 64GB model.

In the U.S., the device is offered through both Verizon and AT&T, which can provide consumers with state of the art 4G LTE networks.

AT&T also issued a statement recently expressing its happiness with the sales of the new Apple tablet.

"On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation's largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people," said the carrier in a press release.
