Almost a week after long time iron fist ruler Muammar Gaddafi was captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte, the former “king of kings” has finally been laid to rest Tuesday in an undisclosed location.

The representative of the city of Misrata, Suliman Fortia, told the Washington Post that the body of the former strongman was laid to rest at dawn “somewhere in the desert.”

Gaddafi’s burial grounds remain unmarked so as to avoid the creation of a shrine to the former leader.

Many commentators have spoken out against the “mob justice” Gaddafi faced and the spectacle that followed in Misrata, which allowed hundreds of people, even children, to view his decaying corpse.

International bodies and human rights groups have condemned the televised conditions that Gaddafi faced prior to his death, arguing that the slain leader might have faced unlawful execution.

Last week, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the death of Gaddafi needed to be investigated, as the circumstances surrounding his death remained “unclear.”

In recent days, a gruesome video has surfaced that was obtained by the Global Post, showing Gaddafi being sodomized by an unidentified rebel fighter.

Human Rights Watch has called for an investigation into the death of Gaddafi saying on their website, “The willful killing of a person in custody is a serious violation of the laws of war and is a war crime that could be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.”

Leaders such as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Britain’s Defense Secretary Philip Hammond also called for full investigations into the death of Gaddafi.

Hammond has said that the reputation of the ruling NTC has been “a little bit stained” with the way the wanted leader was handled upon capture.

Gaddafi’s sons have also spoken out in recent days against the death of their father.

One of Gaddafi’s sons, Saadi Gaddafi, who had escaped to Nigeria in September as rebel forces were moving into Tripoli announced through his publicist, “These barbaric executions and the grotesque abuse of the corpses make it clear that no person affiliated with the former regime will receive a fair trial in Libya.”
