Heritage Christian Academy has been criticized for firing an unwed pregnant teacher. The Rockwall, Texas school makes it mandatory for teachers and employees to agree to a biblical code of conduct, which they say former teacher, Cathy Samford, has violated by becoming pregnant while unmarried.

Hoewever, Samford believes that her dismal was not the proper Christian response.

"We all have different views and interpretations," said Samford. "It's not necessarily the Christian thing to do to throw somebody aside because of those."

School officials see it as a matter of setting the proper example for students and believe that keeping the teacher on in light of her pregnancy would undermine what they are trying to teach the children. However, the former teacher's attorney believes it comes down to laws about pregnancy.

"You can't discriminate against someone who's pregnant or has a pregnancy-related medical condition. That is both state and federal law," said Samford's attorney, Colin Walsh.

However, representing the school, the Liberty Institute, believes the case is about religious liberty.
